I�.aren Le� saa.d two patron complaints are being investigated at the pres�nt
time. One was in the Children's Room �.t �the Mair� Librar� wher� a patron
abjected to boc�ks which nam�d orc�anizations that are conside�red anti-Semitic; -
he said an arganization to which he belongs was named �n one of the book�.
The patron brought in information in relation to his organization. Joax�
Blumen���in is hanc�ling this complaint. The other complaint was filed by a
amother who objected to books on sexuality bei�g on the open shelv�s at the
�l Mo�ena Branch where children can read tY�em. Director Leo saad she feels
that the patron �hould fill out �. complaint fo�rn in order to p�covide more
anformation, and stated that she has s�nt twelve forms to th� patron, one far
each title sh� l�sted in h�� letter as bei.ng offensive. Karen Leo asked the
Board �.f �they had gone on record as supportang the Libra.ry Bill of Rights and
� was �nformed by the trustees that such stand had been ta}�en in 19�1, with a
mema to th� Ci�ey Attorney setti�g the policy fc�r library materei.als.
Director Leo reported that Orang� Public Library �.s participating in the
" Rec�ional rre�.ecommuriications Support System project (1�.T.S.S.)o We h�ve
r�ceived a com�ut�r and p�inter through the pr�oject, but it is not known �.f
we wzll be able ta ]�eep th.� un�t. R.'I'.S.S. l�.nks a11 libraries in Oramge
Cau�ty ar�c� makes it possible to determine if a particular library owr�� a
� parti�ular book wanted far �nt�rlibrary loan and if i�t is on the s�nc�lv�� or
cheCk�d o�ut. : The project is funded through th� Library Servi�e� ar�ca
Cc�r�struc�ion Act.
Joan Blumeristein report�� an the �umYner Read�.ng Proc�ramo whicYa i.s a caoperative
eff�rt with the Santiago Library System. The �theme this year is "��.ck and
Beyond." Jo�n �how�c� a poster which a.ndicates the steps the children go
through a� they read ten baoks� twenty laooks, etc. '�he program will go until
the middle of August at the main library and will terminate two weeks earli�r
at the brar�ches. Also this year, there will be a warkshop for ehildren on
giv�ng book reviews. At the enc� of th� summer� they will b� video-taped� ar��
some will be shown on cablevisian at a la�ter date. �Ioan s�.id the �riend� of
the Library will be funding paperback books to give to children in the f�rst
through �hi�d gracle� who ha.v� read 100 k�ooks a.nd to those in the fourth thraugh
sixth grac�es wha have read 50 book.s. �h� stated that they are also requesting
tha� the �'riends assist in paying e�penses for p�rformers requirinc� honora�ium�.
Director Leo announced that Orange Public Library has be�r� �nvited ta jo�n the
consortium of Anaheim, Pl�.ncent?�.o Yorlaa Li.nda. and Buena Park in an automated
library system. This group is Zookinc� for a new syst�m. Karen Leo said she
has spoken with the C�ty Manager an r�gard to thi� inv�tat�on, �r�d hP expressed
a great deal of inter�st. I�aren L,eo and Karen Klan will be going to �an Diego
on Friday, Apri.l 25� to ob�erve a Brodart automated ].ibrary system. However,
Karen L�o saa.d we will make nc� commitr�ients un�til �th� r�e�w Head c�f �.'echnical
Services is hired laecause tha.t pe�son probably wil]. b� our aui�omatecl prc�j��t
coordinator. She said that if we were to join the abov� corisc�rtiunl, soret� of
aur policies would have to ch�.nge because it is ne��ssary �or TIl�I'Cl���'S to h�v��

Announcements:
Director Leo state� that Prnposition 46 allowa monies to be used for any city
project� whereas SB1220, which was defeated, dya.s totally for building or
reriovating lib�aries.
It was propos�d and determined to s�t up a phone calling netwo�)� in regard to
legislation of vital inte-rest to libraries. �rustee Gorham will be the fi�st
ta r�cezve a �all, followed in consecutiv� orde� by �rus�ees Courtney, Saenz,
McEwan and 6aay.
K�ren Le� announced that the City is forming a cor,unittee for the City Cent�nnial
Celebratian, which will take place in 1�88. She encouraged anyone who is
irit�rested in beiny on the cotnrnittee to contact one of the councilmen. '�'he
appointments will be made by May 8.
:Director Leo said the City Manager gave his consent for the Librar� to purchase
videocass�ttes. Sorne videocassettes have already been purchased and will be
available to the public on June 16. They are educational or informational, not
theatricai releases. At the p�esent time, they will be available only at the
Nlain La_brary until we find out how much demand there is at the branches.
Di��ctor Leo ann�uncea tha�. th� SLS ba�acYau�es are printed �n five difierent
l�anguages - �7apan��e, Chinese� Korean, Spanish and Vietnamese - beside�
English.
The meeting adjourned at 5055 p.m. Next m�eting is scheduled to be held at th�
El Modena Branch on May 19.
