A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION
TO COUNCILMEMBER DANIEL R. SLATER FOR
EIGHT YEARS OF DEDICATED AND
OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF
ORANGE.
WHEREAS, Daniel R. Slater began his tenure as an Orange Councilmember in 1994
and was re-elected in 1998. In 1996, he was voted by the City Council to serve as Mayor
pro tem for two years and was the youngest person ever to serve on the City Council at that
time.Although Orange County declared bankruptcy only two days after he was sworn
in,his enthusiasm never wavered. During his tenure, the City experienced a dramatic
reduction in the crime rate and in neighborhood blight. Several major projects were brought to
fruition,such as The Block at Orange, Century Stadium Promenade, McPherson Athletic
Field,Chapman University expansion and the opening of their School of Law. The Old
Towne Historic District was placed on the National Historic Register, making it the largest
historic district in the State of
California.Councilmember Slater is a longtime advocate of trees and a proponent of open
space and recreational trails. He demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving natural
ridgelines with emphasis on decreased housing density. He frequently scrutinized development plans
for more park space-even a dog park, and authored a resolution for the preservation
of Barham Ranch as a wilderness park. He has been vigilant about abandoned grocery cart
removal and signage, all in the ultimate endeavor of making Orange a beautiful City in which to
live
and
work.As the City became a major force in Orange County, Councilmember
Slater represented the City on various agencies, including the Orange County-
City Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Authority, Orange County Fixed Guideway
Agency, Orange County Council of Governments, the Orange County Regional
Airport Authority,Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor alternate, and representative to the
Corridor Elected
Officials Group.In the spirit of community participation, he promoted meetings at the
cornmunity level so that solutions could be reached in the best interest of the community and the entire
City of Orange, and spearheaded the City's Motto Contest. Councilmember Slater has
a longstanding membership in Rotary and chaired the Leukemia Society's local Celebrity
Waiter's fundraising event for several years. One memorable highlight was shaving his head
for a 1,000 contribution to
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Mayor and City Councilmembers,
citizens of the City of Orange, and City employees express their gratitude to Councilmember
Daniel R. Slater for eight years of dedicated service on the City Council, and for a
longstanding commitment to the betterment of our community.
