RES-9925 Loyal Service Appreciation For Mike AlvarezRESOLUTION NO. 9925
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION
TO COUNCILMEMBER MIKE ALVAREZ AND
COMMENDING HIM FOR EIGHT YEARS OF
LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE
RESIDENTS OF ORANGE
WHEREAS, Mike Alvarez was elected to the Orange City Council in November 1996, and was
re-e1ected in the year
2000.A lifetime resident of Orange, he has devoted much of his time to community service. He
was actively involved in the Orange Chamber of Commerce. In addition to being a member,
he served on the Board, as well as a number of Chamber committees and task forces. He
was president of the Downtown Owner's Association for many
years. He has been a "Friend of the Orange Public Library" since 1993, and was instrumental in
the founding of the Library Bookstore. He assisted in developing a mission statement and goals
for the citywide library
system.Mike has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science/Pre-Law from the
University of California, Riverside, and received a teaching credential in secondary education
from the University of California, Irvine. He graduated in the inaugural class of Leadership
Orange, a community leadership program sponsored by the Orange Chamber designed to educate
and train future civic leaders for
our community.Prior to serving on the City Council, he was a Planning Commissioner and served
on the advisory board of the Official City Old Towne Steering Committee. During his
tenure as Counci1member, he served as Mayor pro tern, and was the Orange representative
on several regional boards, committees and commissions, including the Transportation
Corridor Agency Foothill/Eastern Division), the Orange County Sanitation District, Orange
County Vector Control and the Orange County Fire Ant Authority. He also acted as a Sister
City Goodwill Ambassador traveling to different cities as a representative of
our community. He is a Partner with Alvarez Limited Partners and President of Alvarez Properties, as well
as one of the second-generation owners of the Orange Army-Navy Store, which
has been in Orange almost fifty years. Knowing that sales tax is the lifeblood of any
community, he has always promoted Orange as a business-friendly city, which has
been reflected in numerous Council decisions in which he has taken part. His involvement in
real estate and property management has also given him a well-rounded perspective on the important
issues that surround our city; and has always tried to base his decisions on "
Mike's community involvement began at an early age; and as a child, Old Towne was literally
his playground. Little did he know then that he would eventually take on a leadership role in his
hometown as an Orange Councilmember. His efforts to establish a community program to honor
and remember the heroes and victims of the 9-11 national tragedy are especially
commendable.Mike's mug will be missed on the Council dais (referring, of course, to his personalized
coffee mug) and his empty Diet Dr. Pepper cans will no longer provide target practice for those
so
inclined.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council, City staff, and citizens
of Orange express sincere gratitude to Councilman Mike Alvarez on eight years of loyal
and dedicated public service to the City of Orange and its
residents.ADOPTED this

d day of November,
