A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION
TO MIKE SHATZEL OF THE CITY OF OR~GE
FIRE DEPARTMENT AND COMMENDING HIM
FOR MORE THAN TWENTY-FOUR YEARS
OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED
SERVICE.WHEREAS, after serving in the Army for 19 months, Mike Shatzel began his
career with the California Department of Forestry. He became a firefighter with the City of
Orange Fire Department in October of
1979.WHEREAS, Mike was regarded as an excellent, aggressive firefighter, a leader and
a role model to other firefighters,
and WHEREAS, he was always very concerned with the fair and effective treatment
of the public and was especially good with children,
and WHEREAS, Mike was a dedicated participant of the Rescue Ambulance
program and helped lead the program through its infancy and assisted in the development of SOP'
s and procedures, and then for many years ordered supplies and was responsible for
stocking the ambulances,
and WHEREAS, in 1984, after losing a small daughter to Reyes Syndrome,
Mike received the Rotary Community Service Award for his work with the Reyes
Syndrome Foundation and was the founder and President of the Orange County Chapter,
and WHEREAS, with two coworkers, in 1997, he received the Courage Under
Fire Award for entering a burning building in which people were trapped and effecting a
rescue.NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Orange that Mike Shatzel be recognized and congratulated for his twenty-four years
of loyal and dedicated service to the City of Orange and that the City Council on behalf of
all the citizens of Orange wish Mike and his wife Sue a long, happy and
healthy retirement.ADOPTED this 9th day of
