A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION
TO KAREN KLAN OF THE ORANGE PUBLIC
LIBRARY AND COMMENDING HER FOR FORTY-
FOUR YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE
WHEREAS, Orange Public Library (OPL) employee Karen Klan retired on May 31,
2006, with the distinction of being the employee with the most years of service ever - 44 years -in the
history of the City of Orange; and WHEREAS, Karen
began her employment with the City of Orange on September II,1961. She
started her career with Library Services in the Circulation Division as a Library Page.Karen worked
her way up the various levels of responsibility in the library to being in charge of the Circulation
Division as Circulation Supervisor over the next 19 years; and WHEREAS, in
September of 1962, she was promoted to Typist Clerk I and then to Typist Clerk
II in March of 1966. This position was reclassified as Library Assistant in February of 1973.
In January 1979, Karen was promoted to Senior Library Assistant; and she was promoted to
Circulation Supervisor in December 1980. As Circulation Supervisor, Karen managed the
largest work unit in the library. She took an active interest in each of her employees and
encouraged her staff to provide gracious service to library users. She also encouraged service
within the community. She was instrumental in establishing OPL's Homebound Delivery
service to shut-ins in the community. She was also a founding member of the
Orange Chapter of the Literacy Volunteers of America, for which she recruited and trained volunteer
tutors. For her outstanding performance as Circulation Supervisor, Karen was first recognized
as City of Orange's Employee of the Month for January of 1986 and then was further honored
as Employee of the Year for 1986; and WHEREAS,
in 1984, she received special recogmhon from the Library Board of Trustees
for her work in reorganizing and redesigning the Circulation Desk. Also during her time
as Circulation Supervisor, Karen was a leading member of the Automation Team that brought
the first automated library system to our City in 1989; and WHEREAS,
in September of 1993, Karen moved to the Technical Services Department as
a Library Assistant in charge of ordering library material. This is the position from which she retired;
and WHEREAS,
in 2002, Karen received an honor from the City of Orange that very few employees
ever receive. She was recognized for her for 40 years of service to the City. Today,honoring
her for her 44 years with the City of Orange, we recognize Karen's truly dedicated service,
her commitment to the community, her gracious support of the City and its public libraries,
and her goodwill.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the I, Mark A. Murphy, Mayor of the City
of Orange, on behalf of the City Council of the City of Orange appreciate the long and dedicated
service of Karen Klan and commend her for her forty-four years at the Orange Public
Library,and offers best wishes for a long and happy
retirement.ADOPTED this 13th day of June,
2006.
