A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION
TO RANDY THOM.PSON OF THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT FOR MORE THAN 23 YEARS OF
LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE CITY
OF ORANGE.
WHEREAS, Randy Thompson began his career with the Orange Police Department on
June 10, 1984; and
WHEREAS, Randy was a 19-year member of the SWAT (Special Weapons and
Tactics)and Health & Safety 11550 Teams, as well as a Field Training Officer;
and WHEREAS, on March 6, 1988, Randy's first K-9 partner was Eiko until he
was retired in July 1996. In August 1996, Randy began training his second partner Artie.
Together they would be trained in narcotic detection. Randy would be certified as a K-9 evaluator
and a Master Canine Officer for more than
11 years; and WHEREAS, on December 13, 1988, Randy saved the life of
a nineteen-year-old female determined to jump from the Orange High School roof. Randy in fact,
grabbed her wrists as she let go and pulled her back to safety jeopardizing his own life. Randy
was awarded the Award of Merit in 1989 by
the Orange Rotary Club; and WHEREAS, Randy participated in the
K-9 training, demonstrations, public appearances,COPS Expo, Dash for D.A.R.E. track meet and dignitary
protection for such public figures as Elizabeth Dole and security for
actors including Edward James Olmos; and WHEREAS, during his career of more than
23 years Randy would receive numerous positive commendations for his surveillances that resulted
in arrests of gang members, burglary suspects, grand theft auto
suspects, and even murder suspects; and WHEREAS, in 1999, Randy was
awarded his Advanced Certificate from the Commission on
Peace Officer Standards and Training; and WHEREAS, Randy was a substitute teacher
at the Central Orange County Regional Occupational Program and was described as relating well with
the students and having a teaching
style that was well received; and WHEREAS, in 2003, Fire Chief Vince
Bonacker commended Randy for his diligence and observations in the apprehending of an arsonist that saved
the fire
investigator many hours of work; and WHEREAS, Randy's passion has been coaching
for the Orange High School Panthers for many years and received a Certificate of Recognition on
January 20th, 2006 from the nnd Assembly District Lynn Daucher's Office congratulating the
success of the 2005 Orange High School Football Team. Randy plans on continuing
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Mayor and the City Council hereby
extend sincere gratitude to Randy Thompson for his service to the citizens of the Orange
community, and best wishes for a long, happy and healthy retirement.
