A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING
APPRECIATION TO CAPTAIN STEVE AMES OF
THE ORANGE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND
COMMENDING HIM FOR OVER 30 YEARS OF
LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE.
WHEREAS, Captain Steve Ames began his law enforcement career with the La
Palma Police Department in 1977 where he served as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer
and S.W.A.T. member; and
WHEREAS, Captain Ames was hired with the Orange Police Department on June
29, 1981; and
WHEREAS, Captain Ames worked as a Patrol Officer, D.D.!. Team Officer, Motor
Officer, Background Investigator, Training Manager, and served as a member of SWAT and
the Color Guard; and
WHEREAS, In 1986, Captain Steve Ames was selected as the City's Employee of
the Year for assisting a diabetic mother of two children. As a result of this incident, the
American Diabetes Association included Captain Ames in the production of a training video
designed to educate officers about diabetes; and
WHEREAS, Captain Ames was promoted to Sergeant on March 18, 1988 and
shortly thereafter was given a commendation from his subordinate officers for his exemplary
leadership while supervising Watch 4; and served as a Patrol Sergeant, Division Adjutant,
East sub-station Commander and Personnel and Training Sergeant;
and WHEREAS, While assigned to the Administrative Services Division, established
the Tactics and Training Staff, Pre-Academy and wrote the Department's first sergeant'
s training
manual; and WHEREAS, Captain Ames was promoted to Lieutenant on January 8, 1994
and was assigned as a Watch Commander, supervised the Traffic Bureau, The
Block, Reserve Officers, Explorers and Detective
Bureau; and WHEREAS, Captain Ames was promoted to Captain on September 9,2004
and was the Commander of the Investigative Services Division and the
Administrative Services
Division; and WHEREAS, Captain Ames has been a long-time advocate for
the Police Reserve Program and served as the Vice President of the California
Law Enforcement Reserve Coordinators Association. He drafted the California Commission
on Peace Officers Standards and Training Reserve
WHEREAS, Captain Ames has donated countless hours of his time to facilitate
sessions at the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Tools for Tolerance Program, participated in
events such as; Principal for a Day, Walk to School Day, Orange Relay for Life and
Leadership Orange; and
WHEREAS, Captain Ames has served as a Training Officer at the Golden West
Police Academy for over 25 years and has influenced the careers of over 2000 recruits. He
takes a personal interest in each recruit, remembering their names and academy class years
after their graduation. Many former recruits still seek him out for advice and mentoring. His
personal involvement in Orange County law enforcement has left a lasting impression; and
WHEREAS, Captain Ames has dedicated himself to the betterment of the City of
Orange, the Orange Police Department, and to endless numbers of officers and consistently
placed the needs of others and the organization above his own. He epitomizes public service
in all he does and is an example to all who know him. He is truly a leader in law
enforcement. He will now turn his attention to the Golden West College where he has
accepted a position as the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Training Center.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Carolynn V. Cavecche, Mayor of the City of Orange, on
behalf of the entire Orange City Council, hereby extend sincere gratitude to Captain Steven
M. Ames for his service to the citizens of the Orange community, and best wishes for a long,
happy, and healthy retirement.
