RES-10421 Requesting Cancellation Sale of Orange County Fairgrounds to Governor SchwarzeneggerRESOLUTION NO. 10421
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ORANGE, CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING THAT
GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER IMMEDIATELY
CANCEL THE SALE OF THE ORANGE COUNTY
FAIRGROUNDS.
WHEREAS, the Orange County Fair and Event Center (OCFEC) in Costa Mesa,
California is celebrating its ll9t" anniversary and has been an integral part of Orange
County's rich history; and
WHEREAS, the mission statement of the OCFEC is "Celebration of Orange
County's Communities, Interests and Heritage", a service they have been providing to
Orange County residents for the past 119 years; and
WHEREAS, the OCFEC provides irreplaceable public benefit to numerous
organizations, County residents and businesses, and provides opportunities for disabled
youth of the County; and
WHEREAS, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed the sale of surplus or
underutilized assets for the purpose of helping to close the budget deficit; the California
Department of General Services released a Request for Proposals for the sale of the OCFEC;
and
WHEREAS, the Request for Proposals does not require the buyer to be a local
government agency or local not-for-profit, nor does it require the buyer to
perpetuate ~,he utilization of the property as a fairgrounds, event center, and equestrian facility, all
which are essential to Orange
County; and WHEREAS, the OCFEC is the only asset of its kind the State is
actually proposing to sell and relinquish the control over its use which will negatively impact millions
of Orange County
residents; and WHEREAS, the OCFEC is wholly contained within the city limits of the
City of Costa Mesa; with a General Plan designation as "Fairgrounds" and
zoned as recreational/
institutional"; and WHEREAS, the Orange City Council believes that it is in the best interest
of the public that the Governor immediately cancel the sale of
Fairgrounds property.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of Orange hereby strongly requests that Governor Schwarzenegger immediately cancel
the sale of the Orange County Fairgrounds, and encourages the Governor and Orange
County Fair Board to work together to preserve this vital resource for all Orange
