A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE COMMENDING MARK A. MURPHY
FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE AS A
COUNCILMEMBER AND MAYOR AND FOR HIS
DISTINGUISHED COMMUNITY SERVICE.
WHEREAS, Mark A. Murphy has an exemplary record of community service and has been a strong and
faithful leader to the people of the City of Orange for the past 17 years, having served as Mayor and
Councilmember; and
WHEREAS, a lifetime resident of Orange, Mark has devoted much of his time to community service.
He graduated from Orange High School "Once a Panther, Always a Panther ", attended Rancho Santiago
Community College, and earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees
from the University of Southern California; and
WHEREAS, Mark is dedicated to making Orange a better place in which to live and work. He served on
the Community Video Advisory Board from 1985-1990, the Orange Centennial Commission in 1988,
and the Planning Commission from 1990-1993. Mark was appointed to the Orange City Council
in 1993,elected in 1994 and 1998, was elected Mayor in 2000 through 2006, and served on the City
Council until December, 2010 participating in a total of approximately 580 Council
meetings; and WHEREAS, during his tenure on the Council, Mark represented the City on several
regional Boards,Committees and Commissions including the Foothill-Eastern Transportation Corridor
Agency, North Net Training Joint Powers Authorities, and the Orange County Sanitation District. Mark has
served the City of Orange in a number of other volunteer capacities, including the Orange Senior
Center Board of Directors and the Orange Housing
Development Corporation: and WHEREAS, Mark has utilized his business skills, private industry background, and love for
the City of Orange to the responsibilities of
public office; and WHEREAS, Mark is proud to have served during an exciting and synergistic time in the
City of Orange and was privileged to participate in the completion of many projects including the
expansion the new Main Library and History Center, the Sports Center and Grijalva Park at Santiago
Creek, Veteran's Memorial at Depot Park, Fred Barrera Park, Belmont Park and Serrano Park, mutual
efforts with the Orange Unified School District (Fred Kelly Stadium, McPherson Middle
School, Santiago Middle School), the expansion and growth of Chapman University and Santiago Canyon
College, and multiple projects involving Orange businesses including The Block at Orange and The Village
at Orange. Also included are the Plaza Preservation Project and the renovations of our branch Libraries
and the Senior Center. Mark's priorities have always included public safety, a strong business
community and services for youth and seniors. Mark also initiated cable television coverage of the City Council
sessions and the rescheduling of meetings to allow more of the taxpaying public to participate in
local government; and WHEREAS, Mark A. Murphy was named the local Republican Party's "1998 Elected
Official of the Year" as a tribute to his outstanding leadership in making his community a better place in
which to
work and live.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Orange does hereby honor Mark A. Murphy for his many years of outstanding leadership and devotion to the
City of Orange.We would like to offer our sincere appreciation for his outstanding contributions and thank
Mark and his wife Vikki for their many years of service
