RES-10611 Loyal Service Appreciation For Daniel Dan Graupy GraupenspergerRESOLUTION NO. 10611
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION
TO FIRE CAPTAIN DANIEL "DAN" "GRAUPY"
GRAUPENSPERGER OF THE ORANGE CITY FIRE
DEPARTMENT FOR THIRTY -SIX YEARS OF
LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE.
WHEREAS, Dan has been a long -time resident of the City of Orange. After serving
as a young cadet for the Orange City Fire Department, in 1975 he was hired as a firefighter,
and became a Firefighter Paramedic in 1980; and
WHEREAS, in 1985 Dan was promoted to Fire Engineer, promoted again in 1987 to
Fire Captain and was assigned as a Captain/Paramedic, of which he did a phenomenal job for
several years; and
WHEREAS, Dan's specialty was his work on the rigs; he was amazing at it and he
was always very dedicated to everything he put his hand to do. You could always find what
you needed — everything in its right place during an emergency; and
WHEREAS, for many years, Dan was a master carpenter and fabricator and played a
huge role in fire station design. You can find his fingerprints on everything from building
cabinetry for the stations and apparatus, to designing the boxes in the rear of the engines for
medical aids, and coming up with new innovations for maps; and
WHEREAS, Dan inventoried many high -rise buildings in the City and standardized
information to aid our firefighters during high -rise fires.
WHEREAS, Dan was a "workhorse "; he never slowed down, never said no. He was
always deep in thought and nothing was ever done halfway. He was very conscientious and
took pride in a job well done. He saved the City enormous amounts of money over the years
by working countless hours on his own time, doing the work of three people (possibly due to
his massive caffeine intake), always steering away from praise; and
WHEREAS, Graupy was known for "thinking out loud" after pressing the "on"
button on the emergency radio. Once, while preparing to respond to a very large fire, his
comment on the radio was "we have a lot of fire, you better bring a lot of water "; and,
WHEREAS, Dan, A.K.A., "Dark Cloud" Dan or "Dooms Day" Dan always thought
the worst was going to happen, his cup was always half empty and the sky was falling. What
he was really doing was trying to figure out the worst case scenario so he could have a
strategy on how to deal with incidents before they happened; and,
WHEREAS, Dan cares deeply about people; he is very well thought of and highly
respected. When folks hear his name, it brings a smile to their faces. He has touched the
lives of thousands of citizens and has been a mentor, leader, analyzer, mediator, friend, and
dedicated employee; he always does the right thing and he will truly be missed;
NOW, THEREFORE, on the occasion of his retirement from the City of Orange, we
wish to recognize Dan Graupensperger for over 36 years of dedication to the Fire Department
and public service. May he enjoy doing what he loves to do: boating, fishing, running and
spending quality time with family. We wish Dan and his family many years of happiness,
health, and fulfillment during retirement.
ADOPTED this 22 Day of November, 2011.
