A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ORANGE EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO
HECTOR VELASQUEZ OF THE STREET
MAINTENANCE DIVISION OF PUBLIC WORKS AND
COMMENDING HIM FOR MORE THAN THIRTY -
FOUR YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE
RETIRING FROM THE CITY OF ORANGE
AFTER 34 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE
WHEREAS, HECTOR grew up in the City of Orange, attended Sycamore
Elementary, Portola Middle and Orange High School and participated in track/field, football,
and coached girls softball; and
WHEREAS, Hector began his career with the City as a Parks Guard for the
Community Services Department and on November 12, 1979 finally saw the light and
transferred to the Public Works Department as a Maintenance Worker, on the Asphalt Crew,
and little did he know that he would stay in the same department for 34 years; and
WHEREAS, he surprised even himself by finding out he loved his job and the "City"
and was promoted to Maintenance Worker II in 1981 and then to Equipment Operator in
1982 where he honed his skills as a truck driver, asphalt raker, and roller operator; and
WHEREAS, Hector joined the street sweeping crew in 1984 as a Sweeper Operator;
and
WHEREAS, Hector was promoted to Leadworker in 2010 where he consistently
demonstrated his ability to lead by example; and
WHEREAS, Hector has proven himself as an individual who always strives to be the
very best he can be at whatever task he is given; and
WHEREAS, Hector has displayed a dedication and work ethic that motivates all of
those who have known him; and
WHEREAS, Hector never hesitated to take on extra duties, responsibility or the
opportunity to help others achieve their best; and
WHEREAS, Hector's dedication to his City is only surpassed by his dedication to his
family and, maybe, his love for the UCLA Bruins!
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Teresa E. Smith, Mayor of the City of Orange, on behalf of
the entire City Council, do hereby commend Hector Velasquez for his 34 years of dedication
to Public Works and public service and wish him and his wife Norma many years of happy,
healthy and fulfilling retirement.
