SUBJECT 7771 Approve the purchase and installation of a new Storage Area Network ( "SAN ") for Civic Center and increase the capacity of the SAN at the Police Department. 2. SUMMARY The Civic Center's centralized data storage system has reached its end -of -life. In addition, the Police Department storage system has less than 10% of capacity remaining. As such, it is recommended that the City install a new storage area network ( "SAN ") at the Civic Center and increase the capacity of the Police Department SAN. The equipment will be purchased from and installed by Sidepath, Inc., which has been the City's partner in the installation of both existing SAN's. 3. RECOMMENDED ACTIONS Authorize the purchase and installation of a new Storage Area Network for the Civic Center and the purchase and installation of additional storage capacity in the SAN at the Police Department from Sidepath, Inc. of Irvine, CA in the amount of $373,980.33. 4. DISCUSSION and BACKGROUND The City of Orange acquired a Compellent storage area network (SAN) in June of 2010 in order to consolidate, expand, increase performance, and provide continuous data availability for all of its electronic storage needs. The City went through a competitive process to procure the solution and ultimately selected Sidepath as its partner. In January of 2011 the Orange Police Department (OPD) also acquired a Compellent SAN from Sidepath and the two systems were connected together in order to provide a real -time disaster recovery solution. The City has realized many benefits by implementing the Compellent SAN including: • Increased storage capacity • Increased storage performance • Reduced administration • Continuous data availability • Virtualized data center (67 physical servers reduced to 14) The City has not invested in additional storage since the original purchases were made, but we have reached a point where it is necessary to re- invest in our storage platform. Most of the Compellent solution at the Civic Center is reaching its end -of -life in terms of continued vendor support and must be replaced. In addition, both Civic Center and OPD storage systems have less than 10% of capacity left and must be increased in order to continue operating. All of the City's critical data is stored on the SAN including: financials, permits, business license, utility billing, GIS, e -mail, city documents, fire and police records management, etc. The City has been very satisfied with both Compellent as a storage solution and Sidepath as a trusted partner for implementation and support. Xerox staff is recommending an upgrade of the Civic Center Compellent SAN and an expansion of the OPD Compellent SAN. This will increase both performance and capacity in both locations and provide continued (and improved) operation of the City's storage platform. Civic Center storage will increase from 58 terabytes to 115 terabytes and OPD will increase from 62 terabytes to 82 terabytes. As Sidepath is the registered partner with the City of Orange they receive preferred pricing from Dell and have continually demonstrated value to the City in both product purchases as well as professional services. 8.
