Purchase of one Police Service Dog for the Police Department's Canine Program from
Adlerhorst International, Inc.
2. SUMMARY
The Police Department needs to replace one of its service dogs. B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1475 has
donated $5,000 towards this purchase. Additional monies are available from Federal Asset
Forfeiture unreserved fund balance. The Department would like to use the combined funds to
purchase one police service dog from Adlerhorst International, Inc. Funds are available in the
current Department budget to cover the Basic Handler course training cost.
3. RECOMMENDATION
1. Accept into the City's revenue budget a $5,000 donation from B.P.O. Elks Lodge No.
1475 into revenue account number 100.4021.48390.12307, General Fund - Canine Donations.
2. Authorize the appropriation of $5,000 into expenditure account number
100.4021.55510.12307, General Fund -Other Capital Outlay- Canine Donations.
3. Authorize the appropriation of $5,618 from Federal Asset Forfeiture unreserved fund
balance to expenditure account number 355.4021.55510.12307, Federal Asset Forfeiture -Other
Capital Outlay - Canine Donations.

4. FISCAL IMPACT
Upon appropriation, funds will be available to cover the cost of a Police Dog purchase as
follows:
100.4021.55510.12307 General Fund - Other - Canine Donations $5,000
355.4021.55510.12307 Federal Asset Forfeiture - Canine Donations $5,618
Funds are budgeted and available to cover the cost of the Basic Handler Course as follows
100.4011.51840.00000 General Fund -Local Training $4,500
5. STRATEGIC PLAN GOAL

6. GENERAL PLAN IMPLEMENTATION
Public Safety Goal 6.0 Provide public safety services of the highest quality.
Policy 6.1: Provide the Police Department with adequate personnel, equipment and state -of the
art- technology to effectively combat crime, meet existing and projected service demands, and
provide crime prevention programs. These resources should be provided prior to anticipated
needs.
7. DISCUSSION and BACKGROUND
The B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1475 has donated $5,000 to the Orange Police Department for the
purchase of a Police Service Dog. The purchase cost of the dog is $10,618 with an additional
$4,500 cost for the Basic Handler Course.
This service dog, along with his handler Officer Jude King, will join K9 Bosco and his handler
Officer Daman Allen and K9 Lycan and his handler Officer Carlos Gutierrez serving both
residents and businesses here in the City of Orange
