Point and Shoot: Minor property crimes, minor injury photos, minor CPI,
PR photos, social media.
DSLR: Everything under P&S plus, major property crimes, moderate to
major injuries, CPI, Impression evidence (shoeprints, fingerprints, tool
marks, bite marks), low light scenes, and everything else.
When in doubt request CSI and a DSLR.
Color cards and scales should be used in all
photos where size/color of the subject is
important. This includes all injury photos
and all impression evidence.
Just because you have a card does not mean you
are CSI or are expected to handle duties a CSI
Officer should be doing.
These cards are to be used as a tool if you are
documenting evidence with photography.
1. Overalls of scene as you found it.
2. Additional overalls after placards have
been placed.
3. Mid range and close ups of items of
interest.
4. Items that need special attention.
Shoe prints, fingerprints, etc. should only be
done by CSI.
P&S have limited range and no external flash.
If using a P&S at night make sure your
subject is in range.
DSLR should be used on large night time
scenes. Adjust settings to optimize ambient
light. Use external flash and other light
sources. Tripod might be needed.
After taking photos make sure photo quality
is good and useable.
Overall and close up photos.
Include overall of persons face and where
injury is located.
Use color card or scale.
Take photos with and without color card.
A pencil or dollar bill are not scales.
If at all possible use CSI.
If you must use a point and shoot review
photos to make sure you captured the needed
evidence.
Focus on Focus: Is what you want to
document in focus?
Lighting: Is there enough light or two much?
Composition: Can you tell what you are
taking a picture of?
Make sure what you are trying to document
can be seen clearly by checking your photos.
All photos must go into DIMS. (Evidence.com)
All images on card must be downloaded.
Card will be erased after download.
Don't Remove Card Until Done.
Don’t use period in name (D.Smith vs DSmith)
